Materia is an artistic hub born from the need to create a space where art, nature, and experimentation converge. More than an art residency, it is a platform for dialogue, creation, and cultural exchange—rooted in the unique landscape and energy of Quinta da Bufala.

Materia is a place for artists, thinkers, and creators to engage with raw materials—both physical and conceptual. It’s a hub for artistic exploration where the creative process is valued as much as the final work.

The Residency

We offer a selective residency program that invites artists to immerse themselves in the landscape and explore materiality through process-based, site-specific work. Emphasizing experimentation over commercial production, the residency encourages artists to engage deeply with their surroundings and leave behind traces of their practice, contributing to an evolving artistic archive at Quinta da Bufala.

  • Alina Teodorescu

    Alina Teodorescu is a Romanian socially engaged artist, creating visual, experiential and applied art. Her art materials can be anything from soil, wood, and fabric, to digital screens, social projects and music events.

    Alena Ahrens is a contemporary American-Asian artist whose interdisciplinary practice expands painting and text beyond the retinal and pictorial, transforming color and language into an active, spatial experience.

    Ana Gurduza is an inventor of shapes and ideas. Along ceramics, the interest in esthetic assignments, from painting to graphic work sailed a path for experimentation and exploration.

The Exhibition Space

We include dedicated spaces within Quinta da Bufala for showcasing works-in-progress, residency outcomes, and curated exhibitions. Featuring rotating shows by invited artists, QdB residents, and thematic presentations that reflect Materia’s vision.
